Portrait Competition – Olney Photographer

Portrait Competition – Olney Photographer – Specialising in Children, Newborn and Family photographs.

I recently ran a Competition in association with the Guild of professional photographers.  We had lots of entries and got some fabulous images of children.  It was particularly wonderful that the portrait competition took place in October and November with all the gorgeous Autumn Colours – it’s probably my favourite season to shoot.  The light is beautiful, the colours are stunning and children have a great time throwing the leaves around and having fun.

I was very lucky that two lovely ladies from local Olney Businesses were happy to be my judges so thank you to Louise from Feast and Suzanne from Happy Days Toy Shop.  We got together and looked through all the entries – the full album is available on my facebook page but a couple are surprise gifts so are not featured.

There were some images in colour and some in black and white but I think because of the Autumn colours it was hard to judge them as like for like so the shortlist of favourites were viewed in both colours.  The winner was originally a Black and White image but my Judges preferred the colour version – so here is the winner (with the original black/white below).

The judges loved the colour version because of the tones and her beautiful creamy skin.  They loved the expression, eye contact and fact her hair was blowing in the wind slightly and I’d caught the movement.   They also loved that this was an older child.  I work mainly with younger children and babies but I love to photograph children of all ages.  The judges felt that a beautiful portrait of an older child at a more self-conscious age would really be something for a parent to treasure.  So Congratulations to the family of this lovely girl who win a Wall Art Block worth £200.

However, this wasn’t any easy choice – they loved lots of the images and it was quite hard to narrow them down.  Here are few that got a special mention.

This one was a very close favourite not only because of the Autumn colours but because of the joy on the little boy’s face.  The judges felt this was a great example of the sort of pictures that I produce of children.  Natural and happy.

“Ginger Baby” as he became affectionately known in the judging process got an honourable mention – they loved the colours of the leaves with his hair colour.  I actually collected the leaves in advance of this session and spent several hours with leaves all over my lounge carpet covering them with PVA glue to preserve the colour.  This little chap didn’t want to go to sleep for ages so the light was really fading in the room by the time the last images were taken so from a photography/lighting point of view this isn’t ideal from a cuteness point of view of course its lovely.

Everyone loved this one – how could you not !!  The little one has a great expression and she is looking straight at me and looking really happy.  One of the things I pride myself upon is my interaction with children and babies and my ability to get great expressions from them.  This is very much my style.

With this one the judges really felt I’d captured the personality of the little girl completely and that it was natural and quirky.

And finally .. this little lovely.   We all loved this one – I loved the light and her expression and her little coat.  The judges agreed that she was gorgeous and it was a beautiful images of a beautiful little girl so it really was a close run competition but in the end they kept coming back to the winner.

Thanks to every one that entered – sorry you couldn’t all be winners.

Rewarding Customer Loyalty _Children’s Photographer Northamptonshire

Hello all – just a quick blog post about customer loyalty.  I know we are in the UK and we aren’t exactly famous for our customer service but I think its a really important thing as a small business to always try and offer the best service possible and treat all your clients well.  I don’t know about you but how many times do we complain about companies that seem to offer far better customer service and deals to their new customers and forget about the loyal faithful customers that have stayed with them for years.

Firstly :  I obviously want to continue to treat all my customers as well as possible but in order to thank my old customers for your continued support I’m introducing a loyalty scheme.  If you refer a friend who books a session with me then you will get a FREE 8×6 mounted Art print from your last session – worth £40.  I will be sending out information about this shortly.  So make sure you tell your friend to tell me that you recommended them 🙂  Returning customers will also be eligible for the odd little extra bonus from their sessions.

Secondly: Between now and Christmas I am introducing Siobhan Murphy Photography’s “Random Act of Kindness” –  this will happen every week or two and the recipients will be my loyal customers – so make sure you keep looking at the blog and interacting with my facebook page – it could be you !!   For my very first Random Act of Kindness something will be wending its way to a very lovely lady who has had a very hard couple of years on a personal level and has shown fantastic strength and positivity constantly throughout that time – an inspiration to all who have met her.  Not only has she handled everything brilliantly but she has done so with a constant smile and somehow still found the time to be a source of ongoing support and encouragement to others with their own personal situations and journeys.   Thank you for being a lovely customer and I hope your gift comes in handy before Christmas.  The picture below is a little clue to who you are 🙂

Finally – I just thought I’d re-post a link to my competition I’m running – you could win a family portrait session worth £600 – with Siobhan Murphy Photography.  Please feel free to enter and share, share, share – the odds at the moment are amazing – better than the lottery as there is only 1 entrant to date.  Here’s the bloglink with all the information 🙂

Win a Portrait Session worth £600 and help fight Cancer

I’d like you all to do something for me.  I’d like you to take a few minutes out of your busy day, away from any stresses or away from your desk and take a look at this beautiful video.   The lady in the video Jen Burgess Thompson was a fellow photographer – not someone I knew personally, but have I followed her work and her incredible, inspirational, brave fight against Cancer over the last year and a bit.

We all know people who are fighting Cancer as we speak or who are amazing and inspiring survivors or friends and family that fought hard but didn’t make it …. this video really covers all their stories.  Sadly Jen lost her fight and passed away a couple of weeks ago but her battle was something she chose to make public and by doing so helped to give incredible strength and inspiration to others.  May she rest in peace.

Every year I do a competition so that I can donate a portrait session to a family. Usually these are small giveaways and I just donate my time – but this year I thought I would do something a bit different.  I will be picking one lucky winner to receive a portrait session and prize worth over £600 and in the process raise some money to fight cancer.

One of the things Jen was passionate about was getting parents/mums (especially photographers – but parents/mums in general) in front of the camera with their children – so this shoot will be for all the family – it won’t just be the baby or kids.  You won’t be able to say “well we don’t really want to be in any of the pictures” – that is not allowed I’m afraid.

7) IF — and only IF — the donations reach a really good level I will choose a second winner.

Successful MPA Panel Submission

Delighted to announce that this morning I passed my Licentiate with the Master Photographers Association and my Diploma in Photographic Practice.  The diploma is related the the Business side of running a photography business but the Licentiate involves submitting 20 images for critique by the Panel of Judges, all of whom are MPA Fellows.  The panel has to contain 10 individual images and then 5 images from one portrait session and 5 from another.  I would like to thank all the lovely children and families that made these images possible 🙂

For those who have asked to see the images here is the panel – the first 10 are from different sessions – a mixture of indoor and outdoor shoots.

This set of two beautiful twin sisters were taken from one session – all indoors

And finally – 5 images from a fabulous outdoor session with a really gorgeous family 🙂
